Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold;
For wisdom is better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.
“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And find out knowledge and discretion.
The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate.
Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom; I am understanding, I have strength.
By me kings reign, And rulers decree justice.
By me princes rule, and nobles, All the judges of the earth.
I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me.
Riches and honor are with me, Enduring riches and righteousness.
My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, And my revenue than choice silver.
I traverse the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice,
That I may cause those who love me to inherit wealth, That I may fill their treasuries.
The search for wealth, riches, and honor is the consuming theme of so much of our culture. Just look at all the TV shows touting the lifestyles of the rich and famous, the Hollywood stars, the real estate investors, the gold miners, and even truckers who drive across frozen lakes to make more money!
In Proverbs, we find that the real treasure is wisdom. Wisdom is the very thing that leads to the wealth, riches, and honor we so often seek after. It is the foundation of all leadership and good rule, and stands against so many of the evils we see in society.
Do you want those riches? Do you want to avoid evil happening in your life? Seek after wisdom as your principal thing. It doesn’t come easy, and you will still deal with some difficult times in life, but you will be better off. If you live your life according to the principles of wisdom, you may just turn around one day and see all those things you wanted following you after-all, since wisdom brings her stuff with her!
