Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. 1 John 2:15-17 (NKJV)
Our world is often filled with all sorts of shiny things that draw our attention from God. All good parents enjoy giving gifts to their children, but who enjoys it when their children care more about those gifts than they do us? Even so, God desires that we love Him more than the things He gives us to enjoy here – things that are only temporary, like a young child’s toy.
Loving God is worth more than all that we could ever hope to have. Ask God to help you love Him more than anything else, and don’t be surprised when you feel His tug at your heart.
